SALMON, SEA TROUT AND BROWN TROUT
THE VENUE, ARDVRECK CASTLE LOCH ASSYNT
THE COMPETITORS
PRESS RELEASEThe Achiltibuie Angling Club's 2001 Club Champion is IAN JONES of Altandubh. On a dreich day, and a dour Loch Assynt last Saturday the 8th of September, the championship competition developed into a Master Class in Fly-fishing for the dedicated club members taking part. The grim beauty of the setting brought to mind the Marquis of Montrose and thoughts of his sojourn in Ardvreck castle. Having surrendered himself into the hands of his supposed allies, only to be sent to his death by hanging, he must have cursed the place all the way from Assynt to his gallows tree in Edinburgh. Curses or not, we endured the horrendous weather and fished hard all day. Towards late afternoon, patches of blue sky raised the gloom but not the trout. Except for Ian, in the last half hour he landed six brown trout on the fly, at an average weight of ½ lb. Master on the day, Ian was the worthy winner of the champion's quaich with a 12 oz brownie. In the tradition of a true champion, he filled the quaich twice and we were all happy to help him empty it twice in his honour. One again, a good day was enjoyed by all. The club members wish to thank the Assynt Angling Association and Eric at the Altnacealgach for their very generous hospitality. Bill Mullin,
